Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is a popular real-time strategy game developed and published for PC by Electronic Arts.

It is a continuation of the popular Command and Conquer series that is set in the alternate reality where time travel has changed the events of World War II and pitted the alliance of Western countries against the Soviet Union.

During the events of this game, the almost defeated Soviets managed to turn the tables of the conflict by time-traveling again to the past and killing Albert Einstein, thus changing the history enough to give them the chance to fight back against Western Allies.

However, the unexpected consequence of this historical change leads to the rise of the Empire of the Rising Sun, which serves as the third controllable faction.

Red Alert 3 for PC thus features three large campaigns focused on Western Allies (which are focused on high technology and strong units), Soviet Union (which promotes the use of large amounts of weaker units), and Empire of the Rising Sun (which features transformable units), all featuring wide array of hand-made missions, cooperative play and unique units, structures and gameplay tactics.

Similar to the other games set in the C&C franchise, the presentation of the game uses not only the in-game assets to tell the story in cinematics, but also real-life actors that are filmed on stage.

The core gameplay objective of each mission is focused on gathering resources for building new units and structures, and then utilizing all available military forces to make real-time decisions in offensive, defensive and tactical moves that can surprise the opponent. During the play, users are encouraged to explore the entire tech tree and reach the capability of creating the strongest endgame units and powerful superweapons.

The entire single-player campaign of Red Alert 3 can be played cooperatively with a friend, enabling players to split their responsibilities and coordinate their tactics by managing large armies on multiple fronts.

One of the core pillars of the RA 3 experience was online multiplayer, but sadly this feature of the game died with the shutdown of GameSpy servers. Today, this game can be played online via a separate online solution called “C&C Online” or via ethernet.

Key Features

Three Unique Factions: The game features three distinct factions, each with its own units, buildings, and strategies. The Soviets focus on brute strength and heavy firepower, the Allies rely on advanced technology and versatile units, while the Empire of the Rising Sun emphasizes speed, mobility, and unconventional tactics.

Naval Warfare: Unlike many RTS games, the game places a significant emphasis on naval combat. Many units are amphibious, and the game’s maps often require players to control the seas to secure victory.

Cooperative Campaign Mode: The game offers a unique cooperative campaign mode where two players can team up and tackle missions together. Alternatively, players can play solo with an AI-controlled co-commander.

Full-Motion Video Cutscenes: Continuing the tradition of the series, it features live-action cutscenes with a star-studded cast, including Tim Curry, J.K. Simmons, and George Takei, adding to the game’s quirky and humorous tone.

Sophisticated AI: The AI in this game is highly adaptive, providing a challenging experience for players. Each faction’s AI has distinct behavior, ensuring varied gameplay experiences.

Resource Management: Players must manage resources such as ore, which are crucial for building units and structures. Strategic control of resource nodes is essential for maintaining an edge over opponents.

User Interface

The user interface (UI) of Red Alert 3 is clean, intuitive, and user-friendly. The main menu provides easy access to the campaign, skirmish, multiplayer, and options settings.

During gameplay, the UI is well-organized, with the minimap located in the bottom-left corner, the command panel on the right, and the player’s resources displayed at the top.

Command Panel: The command panel is where players can issue orders to units, construct buildings, and research upgrades. It’s designed to be accessible, with hotkeys for frequently used commands.

Unit and Building Information: Hovering over units or buildings provides detailed information, including health, abilities, and any special attributes. This helps players make informed decisions during gameplay.
