Windows 7

Windows 7 is an operating system from Microsoft for use on personal computers such as home or business desktops, laptops, tablet PCs, and media center PCs that are powered by X86 and X64 processors.

Note: Support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020. We recommend you move to a Windows 11 to continue to receive security updates from Microsoft.

The core benefits of the Windows 7 were focused on ironing out the vast amount of issues that were widely criticized in its processor release Windows Vista, and fully implementing a wide array of advancements (such as advanced search tool, new WinFS storage system, new driver optimizations for increased speed, and much more stable operation than any previous Windows OS release) that made this operating system one of the most celebrated and widely used products Microsoft has ever produced. Even today in 2024, it is estimated that 20% of traditional PCs running Windows are still running Windows 7 OS.

As a part of the Windows NT family of operating systems, Windows 7 arrived on the market in late 2009 as the replacement of poorly received Windows Vista that received many complaints that targeted its stability, performance issues, need for the brand new set of drivers for an incredible variety of devices, lack of compatibility with many legacy hardware accessories, compatibility issues with applications (including video games), and more.

Today, this operating system showcased the numerous benefits of the PC platform, taking advantage of its high modularity and offering users a stable platform for home and business use of a wide array of applications and hardware solutions. It was offered for sale in seven versions (Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate), and remained fully supported by Microsoft until 2015 and limited support by early 2020. Crucial security upgrades for Professional and Enterprise versions will be offered until early 2024.

PROS

• Stability: Windows 7 is known for its stability and reliability. It's been around for a while, and many of its bugs and issues have been resolved through updates over the years.
• Compatibility: It's compatible with a wide range of software and hardware, making it suitable for various types of users and businesses.
• Familiarity: It has a familiar user interface, which makes it easy for users who are accustomed to older versions of Windows to transition to.
• Performance: It's relatively lightweight compared to newer versions of Windows like Windows 10 or 11, which means it can run well on older hardware or systems with limited resources.
• Software Support: Many applications and programs are still compatible with this OS, so users may not face as many compatibility issues with older software.

CONS

• End of Support: Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7 in January 2015, and extended support ended in January 2020. This means no more security updates or technical support from Microsoft, leaving systems vulnerable to security threats.
• Outdated Features: Compared to newer versions of Windows, Windows 7 lacks some features and optimizations that can improve user experience, security, and performance.
• Limited Modern Software Support: While older software may work fine, newer applications and games may not be optimized for Windows 7 or may not be compatible at all.
• Security Risks: With no more security updates from Microsoft, Windows 7 systems are increasingly vulnerable to malware, viruses, and other security threats.
• Limited Hardware Support: As technology advances, newer hardware components may not have drivers or support for Windows 7, limiting upgrade options for users.

As of January 14, 2020, your computer running Windows 7 will still function but Microsoft will no longer provide the following:

• Technical support for any issues
• Software updates
• Security updates or fixes

While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, without continued software and security updates, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 11. And the best way to experience Windows 11 is on a new PC.
