Sony Imaging Edge Desktop (formerly known as PlayMemories Home) is an advanced photo management app, created by Sony Corporation to enable professionals to take full control over their photo shooting sessions, manage remote shooting, easily manage the transfer, storage, and development of RAW photo files, and access wide array of unique features that are offered by professional Sony cameras.

This comprehensive application is built from the ground up to optimize the daily workflow of professional photographers, supporting them for both hand-captured photos and remote shooting sessions where they can take full control over their static cameras via tethered (USB) or wireless (Wi-Fi) connection.

The core functionality of Imaging Edge Software is separated into four categories of tools that Sony has optimized for use with their professional cameras.

What is Imaging Edge Desktop - IEDT?

Imaging Edge Desktop is a desktop application that integrates the three functions of the Imaging Edge series (Remote, Viewer, and Edit) into one. From the Home screen, you can perform tasks such as starting and updating each function, logging in to your account, and checking notifications.

Remote tools allow live control over static cameras connected via USB or WiFi, with live view, and a wide set of controls that include fine-tuning of composition, focus adjustment, and much more.

Built-in Viewer can access large libraries of RAW and JPEG files, with support for several display modes (thumbnails, comparison, preview), overlays such as grids and guides, and with full access to output rating information and XMP compliance metadata.

The app also has extensive Editing tools, where enthusiasts and professionals can take full control over their RAW photo files and tweak every aspect of their presentation (including brightness, hue, and white balance), and export them into any popular compressed photo format (JPG, TIF, PNG, BMP, and others).

Finally, Sony has infused Imaging Edge Desktop with support for their latest photo enhancement technologies such as “Pixel Shift Multi Shooting” (that allows Sony cameras to extract much more fine detail by intelligently combining four RAW photos into one), “Pixel Shift Multi Shooting” (which can remove artifacts found on moving objects), create time-lapse movies using still images, and more.

This program is optimized only for modern 64-bit versions of Windows OS (8.1, 10, and 11). The app is distributed as an automated installer with a size of under 100MB, and since it does not require strong processing hardware it can easily be deployed even on modern laptops.

Key Features

Remote Shooting: The Remote feature allows users to control their Sony camera from a computer, providing live view, focus adjustments, and camera settings directly from the software. This feature is particularly useful for studio photography or when the camera is in a hard-to-reach position.

Image Viewing and Management: The Viewer function enables users to browse and manage their images efficiently. It supports a wide range of Sony camera models and allows for the sorting, rating, and comparison of images.

RAW Processing: The Edit feature is designed for processing RAW images. It provides detailed adjustments for exposure, white balance, and color tone, and it allows users to apply creative styles and export images in various formats.

Tethered Shooting: It supports tethered shooting, where the camera is directly connected to the computer via a USB cable. This allows photographers to instantly view and adjust their shots, making it ideal for studio environments.

Panorama and Time-Lapse Creation: The software includes tools for stitching multiple images into a panorama or creating time-lapse videos from a sequence of photos.

User Interface

Sony IEDT features a clean and intuitive interface that is divided into three main sections: Remote, Viewer, and Edit. Each section is easily accessible from the main dashboard, allowing users to switch between functionalities without hassle.

The interface is designed to be user-friendly, with drag-and-drop features and customizable workspaces that cater to both beginners and advanced users.

The software supports multiple monitor setups, which is a boon for professionals who require more screen real estate. The layout is logical, with all essential tools and settings readily accessible, ensuring that users can focus on their creative work without being bogged down by complicated menus.

Installation and Setup

Installing Sony Imaging Edge Desktop is straightforward. The software is available for download on the official Sony website or FileHorse.com and is compatible with both Windows and macOS.

The installation process involves downloading the setup file, running it, and following the on-screen instructions. The software requires users to create or log into a Sony account, which is necessary for accessing updates and additional features.

Once installed, the software automatically detects connected Sony cameras, and users can start using the Remote, Viewer, and Edit functions right away. Initial setup includes configuring preferences such as storage location for images, RAW processing settings, and tethered shooting options.

How to Use

Remote Shooting: Connect your Sony camera to your computer via USB or Wi-Fi. Launch the Remote function within this app, where you can control your camera settings, adjust focus, and capture images directly from your computer.

Viewing Images: Use the Viewer function to browse through your images. You can sort them by date, rating, or other criteria, and compare multiple images side by side.

Editing RAW Files: Open your RAW images in the Edit section. Here, you can make detailed adjustments to exposure, white balance, and color tone. Once satisfied with your edits, export the images in your desired format.

Tethered Shooting: For studio photographers, tethered shooting allows real-time feedback and adjustments. Connect your camera and adjust the settings as needed, with the images appearing instantly on your computer screen.

Creating Panoramas and Time-Lapses: Select the images you wish to stitch into a panorama or use for a time-lapse. The software guides you through the process, with options to fine-tune the output.
