HTTPS Everywhere is a small but highly useful open source security addon that can re-route the connections between you and the numerous websites that have still not adopted the advanced encryption standard HTTPS.

This standard was introduced to ensure that core communication between you and the target website is protected from outside interference, preventing data leaks and improper authorization of the target website (ensuring that you are not visiting a fake website that is trying to impersonate the real online location). It can also help protect you against many forms of surveillance, censorship, and account hijacking.

Originally developed as a cooperation between The Tor Project and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, this project aimed to provide HTTPS support for websites that have not yet properly adopted this technology, including fixing of some of the most commonly found mistakes in HTTPS integration. For example, some websites properly encrypt their landing pages, but numerous links then lead to fully or semi-encrypted sub-pages, leaving an opening to malicious third parties to take advantage of your connection and try to extract data or redirect you to untrusted services.

During the development of this service, It has evolved together with the needs of the worldwide community of internet users. The source code of this project is posted online and is available to everyone to learn from, recommend improvements, or even actively help in further development.

Features

Automatic HTTPS: It ensures that your browser connects to websites using the secure HTTPS protocol whenever available, protecting your data from eavesdropping and potential security threats.

Extensive Rulesets: The extension comes with an extensive set of rulesets that define which websites should use HTTPS. These rules are regularly updated to accommodate changes in web security practices.

Custom Rules: Users can create custom rulesets to enforce HTTPS on specific websites or domains, giving you full control over your online security preferences.

Mixed Content Blocking: It also helps prevent mixed content issues by blocking insecure resources on HTTPS-enabled websites, ensuring a more secure browsing experience.

Cross-Browser Support: This extension is available for popular web browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Opera, providing a consistent security experience across platforms.

User Interface

The user interface of HTTPS Everywhere is minimalistic and unobtrusive. It primarily operates in the background, with a small icon in the browser's toolbar. Users can click on the icon to access options, view the rulesets, and enable/disable the extension as needed. The interface is straightforward, making it easy for both novice and experienced users to navigate.

Highlights
  • Lightweight and fast security service for converting improperly encrypted webpages into secure HTTPS locations.
  • Protect your PC against hijacked webpages, account hijacks, surveillance, censorship, data leaks, and more.
  • Developed in an open-source environment.
  • Available for Chrome, and several other modern browsers on PC and mobile.
  • 100% FREE!
Installation and Use

It can be easily installed from the Chrome Web Store by clicking on the “Add to Chrome” button and waiting just a few seconds for a sub-2 MB installation archive to be downloaded and activated inside your web browser. Upon finishing the installation, a new “S” (secure) icon will be added to your browser taskbar. During the regular browsing, this “S” icon will change colors, signifying loading of natively encrypted HTTPS pages, pages that are automatically converted to HTTPS by this service, and un-secure web pages that HTTPS Everywhere has failed to encrypt.

The app features no significant customization options, as it works automatically in the background during the loading of all web pages.

If during your usage of HTTPS Everywhere some websites started being rendered weirdly, with changed layouts and rendering errors, you need to turn off this addon when visiting the affected website. The app is currently in rapid Beta development, and its tweaking of security measures can sometimes cause websites to load badly.
