Espanso is a free programming and productivity utility that can accelerate the ways users can type long and complicated sentences, scripts, and text content during their time at PC at home, school, or work. Developed by a single user, this lightweight application nestles into the taskbar menu and monitors the keyboard text entry for the matching keywords, enabling users to dramatically speed up their text entry.

Main features

Espanso is distributed online as an automated installer that can be easily deployed on any modern desktop or laptop Windows PC. And since it is so light on resources, users will not even feel that it is active and running in the background. Optionally, the sole developer of this app has also offered a fully portable version of Espanso that can be easily deployed on portable storage drives and moved from one PC to another with ease.

This app is so lightweight in its function that even does not have any visual configuration window. To set up new custom shortcuts, users must go to its installation directory and find the file “default.yml”. There they can modify or add new shortcuts by utilizing the simple “trigger:” and “replace:” commands. This simple approach allows more knowledgeable users to create a database of text shortcuts without any limitations, covering all of their daily home, school, and work usage scenarios.

The app can even implement various system data into the pasted text, including things such as current time, date, clipboard data, and more. More advanced users can enhance their typing experience with pre-made packages that are focused on many aspects of typing in categories such as Language, Symbols, Math, Shell, Emoji, Accents, Letters, Greetings, and others.
