With more than a decade and a half of experience in the creation and publishing of eLearning content, it has today grown into a formidable authoring and project exporting tool that has built-in support for an incredible variety of output formats.
This includes not only traditional SFW and HTML5 formats, but also the conversion of content into MP4 videos that can be reproduced on any modern hardware with competent media players or directly hosted on a website.
The app supports the importing of data from a wide variety of sources (which of course includes PowerPoint presentations) and a wide array of tools for optimizing data for final presentation.
This includes timeline, audio editing, recording modes, quiz question randomizer, zoom settings, transitions, gradient and shadow support, various motion effects, adoption of Fluid Boxes and text scaling technology, Typekit font support, customizable closed captions, conversion of non-interactive demos into interactive ones, live device previews, webcam video recording and much more.
As of recently, eLearning presentations made in Adobe Captivate can also be previewed and fully deployed in Virtual Reality (VR) environments, or even create drafts straight on your compatible mobile device (iOS).
The app also has full support for screencasting, and comprehensive software simulations with built-in access to effects such as mouse clicks, keypresses, and rollover images.
The app supports nine separate project files (the main ones being .cptx and .cpdx), two forms of interim file formats, and four main output file formats - .html (with full HTML5 compliance), .sfw (for Flash presentations), .MP4 (for reproduction as a non-interactive video file), and .qml (XML-based presentation format).
The modern version of Adobe Captivate is optimized to streamline the process of Jumpstart Compliance with easy-to-make software simulations, template editing, PowerPoint conversion into interactive videos, mobile and VR project management, comprehensive support for screencast (both for showcasing video and webcam feed), creation of multi-module branched courses and easy access to large library templates.
Originally developed under the name RoboDemo, and later renamed to Macromedia Captivate, this powerful eLearning authoring tool became part of the Adobe Suite of apps in 2006. Since then it has received numerous updates, which are since 2017 fully integrated into Adobe Creative Suite subscription.
In addition to the full access to the app via premium Adobe Creative Cloud license, it can also be tested via a 30-day FREE trial. In addition to Windows PC and macOS, the app is also available on iOS, where it has found considerable success on larger display devices (iPads).
